Cowboy Poetry Week
http://www.cowboypoetry.com/week.htm
The sad news for December 13th, is that the Western world lost Curly Musgrave today to a sudden illness.
It is fitting he was able to go at his home with his family, and we should all pray for them and their recovery.
Unfortunately for our event, we wont get to enjoy his great voice and musicianship although Belinda Gail will
still be here to represent them both as it should be.
We are going to dedicate our new stage we are building for Wild West Days in the name of Curly,

Cactus Rose Saloon
Proprietors Tom Roper & Johnny Watts
Western towns often took shape as a tent city first, with saloons leading the way. As a town got established the early saloons were used for whiskey and beer, card games and even sometimes saloons were used as bathhouses and barbershops; post offices and drug stores; cigar stores and even courthouses, making this the hot spot of social activity in newly formed western towns. Many of the famous gunfights originated from a saloon environment out into the streets. Description of events and entertainment:
Cowboy Action Shooting
This nationwide society has many clubs throughout the country in every state. They primarily are people that love shooting, but enjoy the aspect of shooting in the traditional cowboy way of the late 1800's. As mandated by their society, the participants must wear clothing that dates to the period, as well use guns that were available before the turn of the century. They divide themselves into posses consisting of several members and each posse goes to a separate stage to shoot. Each stage is set up with targets and a record of time and accuracy is kept. Safety rules the day though, and everyone attends a safety meeting before each match so they know the rules before they start. This Society has grown by leaps and bounds in the last 20 years and they now have over 80,000 members.
Our exhibition will be put on by the ORSA Cowboys from Oak Ridge Tennessee, led by it's President Tennessee Tombstone. They will be demonstrating with shoots at our stages, how this popular sport is done, and how you the public can get involved in not only their club but any club of your choice. There's no better way to learn than from the best, and this club has some of the best shooters around.
Cowboy Mounted Shooting Association
This Association grew out of the founding member, who's desire to have mounted cowboy shooting came from riding as a young child and shooting glass bottles off fences. The problem was using real bullets and glass bottles, which just wasn't as safe as shooting from the ground, on top of horses. So the idea of shooting balloons with blanks acquired from an aerial demonstration gave birth to this Association and the Cowboy Mounted Shooters were on their way. They are now the #1 fastest growing equine sport of any kind. Cowboy Mounted Shooters are also required to be in period dress, which adds to the realness of what they do.
Stages are set up with an intricate pattern of 5 balloon targets, followed by a rundown of 5 more balloon targets that make up a run. Because they are only using blanks and shooting balloons, it is a safe spectator sport that is drawing an increasing amount of people each year.
Our exhibitions everyday and our Pro Match on Saturday will be hosted by our ranch and handled by the CMSA Tennessee club which is in middle Tennessee. This is Tennessee's largest club and has some of the best Cowboy Mounted Shooters in the country. This is going to be an exciting thing to watch.
Quick Draw Exhibition
THE HOTSHOT GUNSLINGER SHOW
ARMED & HILARIOUS
World Champion performer Hotshot Johnny Tuscadero presents a one man Wild West extravaganza with over 50 gun tricks, bull whip stunts and fancy target shooting. Hotshot is one of the fastest guns you will ever see and has a wit to match. A truly amazing, fun and funny display, keeping the Western Arts wild, www.hotshotperformer.com.
We are pretty proud to say we have Hot Shot Johnny Tuscadero, one of the greatest fast draws in the country and Johnny is the 2009 SASS~WWPAS World Champion Gun Spinner. Not only can you watch the best go at it, you can also participate for a small fee, and quick draw with your friend's or family. One of our co-hosts Johnny Watts has built a plexiglass system by which you can shoot safely in a Quick Draw contest where a timer light will announce the winner instead of a trip to Boot Hill!
Cowboy Poetry
Probably the oldest form of entertainment in the Old West, was a bunch of cowboys sitting around the campfire listening to stories from other cowboys, sometimes in rhyme and prose. There might have been an old guitar or harmonica around, but even that was pretty rare, so the art of Cowboy Storyteller was born. Now in today's time, because of a few dedicated tellers, this art form has reached a new modern plateau that no one probably could have ever predicted. The imagination of the old west, captured by these modern poets and storytellers, could not have been left in better hands than if the originators had been reborn for our education and enjoyment. We owe it to ourselves to hear one of these great Cowboy Poets of our time, like Waddie Mitchell not only to cherish our heritage, but to rekindle what made our country into the great country it is, and ought to stay as long as we make it that way!
Chuck Wagon Cook Off
This is an intensely contested event whereby several wagon owners compete not only with their cooking ability, but also the worth of their wagon. Just like today when folks go and invest thousands in their cars and motor homes, these wagon owners take the same interest and care of their historical wagons. There is hardly a more beautiful sight than to see several old Chuck Wagons gathered together in one place. It's like stepping back in time as though you were in a John Wayne movie. If that wasn't good enough, you get can buy a plate of some of the best trail cooking this or any side of the Mississippi.
We will be supplying the food to every wagon so that the competition is fair from the start, but then the cooks take over and may the best cook win is how it works. There's something special about a trail cooked meal around a wagon train of wagons.
Native American Village
"East Meets West"
Starring Jim Saw Grass & Little Big Mountain
Our Native American friends will have not only their handmade items for you to see, but they will be performing some pow wow dancing and other fun activities for your enjoyment. The time period that we are celebrating was often an unhappy situation for our Native Americans, but they survived and have brought forth their eco friendly ways, and their collective family traditions for us to see and experience. There aren't many people in history that are closer to the earth and the animals than our Native Americans.
"East Meets West" will capture your attention with their long running Native American Show. They will teach you about the past and present of the tribes and dispel many myths and misconceptions about our two cultures. Their flute and drum playing is simply moving to say the least. Relive the historical and present day Native American Indians.
Miscellaneous Events
Rounding out the fun that families can enjoy are the following:
Medicine Man Shows-
The Famous Professor Farquar & Polecat Annie
These shows have been around for centuriesand were a part of the Old West as much as Whiskey and Song. Probably about the only entertainment in most of the small frontier towns was these Medicine Shows. Peddling their elixirs and almost anything else they could get away with selling, they traveled about trying their best to make a living, even if they might cut a corner or two along the way. Today's Medicine Man shows consist of the same things of yesteryear, although most folks don't fall for the old saying, “this elixir can cure you of anything” anymore. We hope!
Square Dancing-
Traditionally the dance of the old west, square dancing will be available whenever a band or record is playing in the main stage area. We will have instructions available and then we will call it for everyone's fun and enjoyment. Bringing to life the fun families used to have before all of the electronics of our day, square dancing ranks right up “thar” with family fun at its best!Reenactments-
We have some great reenactments available during each day to watch and enjoy. Watch how the Gunfight at the O.K. Corral is done in slow motion and then in real time. Almost the whole world has heard of that great fight, which lasted about 30 seconds in real life. Also watch Wild Bill Hickok get called out by an acquaintance who not only got his women, but also his watch. It is really an enjoyment to watch. Also see Wild Bill get shot from behind holding the Aces N Eights, forever known as the dead man hand.Pioneer Games-
Families used to meet at places, probably the local church yard, and play games that involved the whole family. Everyone family would bring a plate of food, and the games were on. Tug of War, 3 legged race, the spoon race and many more were played in friendly competition. These days most families are separated by electronic games which keep us apart even in our own homes. Isn't it time to get back to the basics, and have some real family fun?Games for the kids-
Horseshoe and Easter Egg hunts are great fun for kids. Searching around for these items, and winning a prize for finding the most, or the Golden Horseshoe.Miscellaneous-
Learn how to rope or throw a tomahawk, and many more fun things to watch and do will be right at your fingertips.
You can also pay a small fee to take a horseback ride, quick draw against your friends, rifle shoot or shoot skeet for prizes. We have loads of fun awaiting you and your family, and it's all at Easter so you should have a few days off to enjoy.

Our official Master of Ceremonies will be the famed Marshal Andy from Knoxville, Tennessee. Marshal Andy has a great public television show every Saturday that brings the west back to life. From their 2-steppin' western swing to the mournful minor key ballads you will enjoy the ultimate easy-listening experience!
